The Vatican Necropolis, Via Triumphalis

Reopening of the Vatican Necropolis, after being closed to the public, back definitely to be visited thanks to new excavations in Via Triumphalis. The special tour of the Vatican Necropolis located under the basilica, where the tomb of St. Peter is kept, is a concession that the Fabbrica di San Pietro authorizes occasionally according to a suitable programming prepared by the Excavations Office.

The works were carried out to expand the archaeological area and have had the permission to link the sectors of the Vehicle fleet and Santa Rosa until now disjointed. The new route runs through the remains of the necropolis and offers the opportunity to admire the cemetery and several old works unearthed as marble, stucco mosaics and frescoes.

During the excavations, an area devoted to cremations that are rarely preserved in the complex of this type, was discovered, it can be also visited. Various locations in eleven stations, visitors can see the touch-screen monitor with the chance to deepen their visit with the virtual reconstructions and fact sheets on burials. There are also a series of explanatory panels and two movies that will complete the visit.
