The Medici Chapels

The Medici Chapels

The Medici Chapels become a State Museum in 1869. They were built in the 17th century and were obtained from some areas of the Church of San Lorenzo.

The Museum is formed by the New Sacristy, designed and conceived by Michelangelo in his sculptural furniture, which represents the purest expression of the genius of the artist and combines the dynamic architecture with remarkable sculptures; from the Chapel of the Prince, which bursts of color, due to the decorations created with semi-precious stones with the mosaic technique, counterbalances the absolute purity of the white marble statues and gray stone geometric decorations in the rest of the museum; the Crypt, where the Medici Grand Dukes and their families, are buried and the Crypt Lorraine, which includes, in addition to the remains of the Lorraine family , the funerary monument to Cosimo the old “Pater Patrie”. The Medici Chapels also keep a part of the valuable Treasure of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, consisting of sacred vestments and stunning reliquaries.
