The Gate of Heaven in the Siena Cathedral until January 6, 2014
Until January 6, 2014 you can admire the The Gate of Heaven in the Siena Cathedral. An exciting tour inside the Siena Cathedral
The “gate of heaven” opens to visitors, like they ascended the staircase which appeared to Jacob in a dream, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. In the dream, God promises to Jacob the land on which he was sleeping and vast lineage. When he awoke Jacob exclaimed, “This is the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven”, a verse used by the liturgy during mass about the dedication of cathedrals. But ‘gate of heaven’, according to the Litany of Loreto, is also the Virgin, a definition that best expresses the power and goodness of Mary, which, as the Mother of Christ and of humanity, contributes to our eternal salvation in Heaven where she is ‘Queen assumed’. The path “from above” will in fact allow a better understanding of the dedication of the Cathedral of Siena to the Assumption of Our Lady and the strong bond that the citizens of Siena have for centuries with their ‘patron’: Sena vetus civitas Virginis.
