The Restoration of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Museums
The Restoration of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Museums began in 1964, concentrating the work on the section of “Stories of Christ and Moses”. The work was suspended in 1974 but in 1980 the restoration works restarted and the fresco was brought to light.
In fact, it was discovered that beneath the opaque patina, which had been applied for centuries to cover the smoke stains, the fresco retained its former splendor.
As a matter of fact, the original color that Michelangelo used in almost all his works has been kept in magnificent state of conservation over time, is intact thanks to the technique learned by the artist in Florence in the Ghirlandaio’s workshop.
The restoration of this section of the Sistine Chapel brought to light the vivid and wonderful colors of the “Stories of Christ and Moses,” which for centuries have been harshly criticized as they have often been compared with other works of this great artist.
